The History of IVU

IVU, The International Vegetarian Union (based in the United Kingdom), is a worldwide union of vegetarian groups that has been in operation for about one hundred years. Since it's first conference in 1908 in Dresden, Germany, it has been educating about vegetarianism at global conferences. IVU's 1998 conferencein Thailand marked its 33rd worldwide gathering.
IVU was founded in 1889 as a union to unite vegetarian groups across the globe and as a successor to the Vegetarian Federal Union. The Vegetarian Federal Union held its first world conference in 1893 in Chicago, a second (1897), third (1901), and fourth (1905) in London, and its final conference in Dresden, Germany in 1908, which is when the IVU was established.
